Ridership Stats

I had a very pleasant phone call with an employee at Translink's SkyTrain last night. He provided me with some approximate ridership stats on SkyTrain. These numbers are total boardings and include transfers from buses.

Vancouver (Pop: 2.1m) SkyTrain Average Daily Weekday Ridership

2006: 220,000
2007: 225,000

During peak A.M. hour about 5,000 – 6,000 people use the SkyBridge.

Calgary (Pop: 1.1m) CTrain Average Daily Weekday Ridership
2006: 248,200

Me thinks Trans Link's ridership is and always has been 10% to 205 overstated.

The SkyTrain types have always suffered major transit 'penis' envy with Calgary's C-Train.

Calgary's ridership statistics are verifiable, not so with Translink's, which relies on an alchemy of partial boarding counts, fares revenue, and passes sold.

Peak hour capacity on SkyTrain (Expo Line) is about 11,000 pphpd, versus Calgary's peak hour capacity (with improved signalling in 2008) of 15,000 pphpd.

In the real world, Calgary's ridership statistics, stand up to scrutiny, where as SkyTrain's do not.
